The set of The Exorcist was plagued by a series of strange and unsettling events, leading some to believe that it was cursed or haunted. Here are some of the most notable incidents that occurred during filming:
-
Deaths: Over the course of filming, nine people associated with the production of The Exorcist died. Two actors, Jack MacGowran and Vasiliki Maliaros, died before the film was released. Interestingly, both characters also lost their lives in the film.
-
Fire: The set of Regan MacNeils home, the possessed protagonist, burned down during filming. Director William Friedkin saw a pigeon fly into a circuit box and promptly catch fire. The entire set was destroyed, except for one room - Regans bedroom, where the exorcism scene happened. Production was halted for six weeks.
-
Injuries: Several crew members were injured during filming. A carpenter working on set lost his thumb, and a lighting technician lost one of his toes. Additionally, actress Linda Blair injured her back during the exorcism scene, and her scream of pain in the film is real.
-
Blessing: Following the fire and a number of other strange occurrences, Friedkin asked Reverend Thomas Birmingham to perform a blessing on set. The priest declined to perform an exorcism, but gave the cast and crew a blessing instead.
Despite these incidents, no accidents during filming of The Exorcist were fatal.
