Anne of Cleves was the fourth wife of King Henry VIII of England. She was born in Düsseldorf, Duchy of Berg, Holy Roman Empire, on either June 28 or September 22, 1515, and married Henry VIII on January 6, 1540. The marriage was arranged as a political alliance between England and the Lutheran enemies of the Holy Roman emperor, Charles V, as it appeared that the two major Roman Catholic powers, France and the Holy Roman Empire, were about to join together to attack Protestant England. However, Henry was disappointed with Annes appearance and lack of sophistication, and the marriage was annulled on July 9, 1540, by an Anglican convocation. Anne was rewarded with a large income and was allowed to remain in England, where she lived at Richmond or Bletchingley, with occasional visits to court, until her death on July 16, 1557. She was buried in Westminster Abbey, and her magnificent funeral was conducted according to Catholic rites as Anne had wanted. There is no evidence that Anne was invited back to court after 1554.
