The upcoming Batgirl movie, starring Leslie Grace as the titular heroine, was cancelled by Warner Bros. Discovery in August 2022, despite being completely finished and on the cusp of release. The cancellation was met with significant backlash on social media, with fans looking forward to seeing Grace in the Batgirl suit for the first time. The decision to cancel the movie was reportedly due to the actual quality of the film, which was deemed not good enough for a theatrical release or streaming on HBO Max. The budget for the movie had also climbed higher than expected, making it too expensive to release on OTT. The cancellation of Batgirl was part of a much grander shift in the hierarchy of power over at DC Studios, and the decision was made to reflect the leaderships strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max. Despite the cancellation, new DC co-chair Peter Safran has said that Batgirl is a character that inevitably they will include in their story, and he would love to work with the directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah in the future.
