Betsy Garth was a character on the Western television series "The Virginian," played by actress Roberta Shore. Betsy Garth was the daughter of Shiloh Ranch owner Judge Garth, played by Lee J. Cobb. Betsy Garths exit from the show was a turning point for "The Virginian" and marked the end of the classic early period of the show. In the beginning of Season 4, Betsy Garth married former minister David Henderson and left for her new home in Pennsylvania as a preacher’s wife, declaring "I dont need Shiloh anymore". Roberta Shore, a dedicated Mormon, was written out of the show at her own request to concentrate on her own real-life marriage. Her departure from the show was a major loss for the show and one-half of a double body blow in the unsuccessful Season 4 when Lee J. Cobb also departed.
