Elizabeth Short, also known as the "Black Dahlia," was a 22-year-old Hollywood hopeful who was found brutally murdered in Los Angeles on January 15, 1947. Her body was split in half at the waist, and pieces of her flesh had been cut away from her body. The case remains unsolved, and despite many theories and confessions, the murderer has never been found. The FBI was asked to help with the investigation, and it quickly identified the body just 56 minutes after getting blurred fingerprints via "Soundphoto" from Los Angeles. The young woman turned out to be Elizabeth Short, later dubbed the "Black Dahlia" by the press for her rumored penchant for sheer black clothes and for the Blue Dahlia movie out at that time. The investigation was led by the L.A. Police Department, and the FBI searched for a match to fingerprints found on an anonymous letter that may have been sent to authorities by the killer, but the prints werent in FBI files. The case has inspired many books and films, both fiction and nonfiction, and it remains one of the most famous unsolved murder cases in the world.
