BlackBerry phones were once very popular, especially among business users, due to their excellent email and centralized administration features. However, BlackBerry was slow to adapt to innovations such as camera phones, touch screens, and WiFi. The iPhones popularity among business users was a significant blow to BlackBerry, as many people wanted to use iPhones instead of BlackBerries. BlackBerrys flagship product, which integrated with Microsoft Exchange, became less necessary as data transfer became cheaper, and people could talk to Exchange directly. BlackBerrys market share declined significantly in the Western world, but demand for BlackBerry phones remained strong in developing countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and Indonesia. BlackBerry stopped designing phones internally in 2017, and in January 2022, the companys infrastructure, operating system, software, and services were decommissioned, rendering BlackBerry phones officially defunct and physically unable to function.
