According to the search results, Clemsons starting kicker, Robert Gunn III, struggled in the first three games of the 2023 season, converting on only one of four field goal attempts. After Gunns struggles, Clemsons head coach, Dabo Swinney, called Jonathan Weitz, a former walk-on kicker who graduated in 2022, to come out of retirement and rejoin the team. Weitz, who was taking online classes in Charleston, South Carolina, agreed to return to the team and is now in line to start against Florida State. Weitz was a backup kicker for the previous four seasons and appeared in seven games, going 3-for-3 on PATs as BT Potters backup. In practice on Monday, Weitz converted seven of eight field goal attempts despite not kicking a football since April. Swinney mentioned that Weitz is "pretty solid" for 45-yard field goals or shorter, and Clemson just needs "someone to make some layups right now". Gunn will still handle kickoffs for the Tigers, according to Swinney, and if the team needs to kick a long field goal, Gunns leg remains the best option.
