David Njoku, a tight end for the Cleveland Browns, suffered burns on his face and hands in a household accident on September 29, 2023, while trying to light a fire pit at his home. He was reluctant to offer details about the incident, but he did say that it was a bonfire accident and that it ended up exploding when he lit it up. Despite his serious injuries and being in extreme pain, Njoku played in the Browns game against the Baltimore Ravens two days later and had a team-high six catches. He arrived at the stadium wearing a mask to hide his injuries and then wore a mask during warmups. Njokus burns on his face and hands continue to heal, and he has been able to play through the injury. He has been using his social media platform to raise awareness about burn injuries and has teamed up with the American Burn Association to bring awareness to those who have suffered a similar type of incident as himself.
