Damar Hamlin is a safety for the Buffalo Bills who suffered a cardiac arrest during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals on January 2, 2023. He collapsed on the field after making a tackle, and his heartbeat was restored on the field before he was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for further testing and treatment. Hamlin was administered CPR on the field, and his teammates surrounded him, shielding him from public view. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and was sedated. Hamlin was diagnosed with commotio cordis, which is an extremely rare consequence of blunt force trauma to the heart that happens at exactly the wrong time in the heart rhythm, causing the heart to stop beating effectively. After spending time in critical condition, Hamlin was eventually cleared by three specialists to return to football. He announced his plans to make a comeback to the NFL after being fully cleared to return to playing football. Hamlin saw his last of three heart specialists in April 2023 and was in attendance and participating at voluntary workouts with the Bills that week. He was fully cleared to rejoin the team and is back on the field for training to get ready for the fall season.
