Denise Amber Lee was a 21-year-old mother from North Port, Florida, who was abducted, raped, and murdered in January 2008 by Michael Lee King. Her abduction and death became widely known due to several 911 calls made that day, including one by Denise herself using her abductor's phone. Despite her efforts and calls from witnesses, due to failures in the 911 system, police arrived too late to save her. King was convicted of kidnapping, sexual battery, and first-degree murder, and was sentenced to death in 2009. Denise's family has since advocated for improvements in 911 dispatcher training and public safety. The Denise Amber Lee Foundation was established to promote better training and awareness, and the Denise Amber Lee Act was passed in Florida to improve 911 operator training standards. Her children have also spoken publicly about their mother to honor her memory and raise awareness about emergency response issues.
