Edith Bunker is a fictional character on the 1970s sitcom All in the Family (and occasionally Archie Bunkers Place), played by Jean Stapleton. She is the wife of Archie Bunker, mother of Gloria Stivic, mother-in-law of Michael "Meathead" Stivic, and grandmother of Joey Stivic. Her cousin is Maude Findlay (Bea Arthur), one of Archies nemeses. Edith is an undereducated but kind, cheery, and loving woman who is the matriarch of the family and keeps them intact.

In the first episode of the second season of Archie Bunkers Place, it is revealed that Edith has died as a result of a stroke. The episode is titled "Archie Alone," and it shows Archie struggling to cope with the loss of his wife. The death of Edith was a significant event in the show, and it was a result of Jean Stapletons decision to leave the show. Stapleton was concerned about being typecast in "submissive" roles, so she began guest-starring instead of appearing as a series regular. Despite pleas from Norman Lear not to let Edith die, Stapleton left the show in 1980, leaving Archie to carry on as a widower.
