He was last seen playing on a mound of dirt around 5pm and was missing half an hour later when his grandmother called him in. Despite one of the largest and most intensive search operations in the area involving police, state emergency services, the Australian Defence Force, drones, helicopters, Aboriginal trackers, and community volunteers, no evidence of Gus has been found. The search was initially scaled back in early October but resumed on October 14, 2025, in a new area of the property based on ongoing investigations. Authorities have considered various theories, including that Gus wandered off and was trapped, an animal attack, or involvement by a third party, but no physical evidence supports these conclusively. Police have formed a new taskforce dedicated to the recovery of Gus and the investigation into his disappearance. The family remains hopeful despite police acknowledging the likelihood of non-survival given the harsh conditions and the time elapsed since his disappearance.
