Guy Fawkes was captured during the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and met a brutal end for treason. After being discovered guarding the gunpowder beneath the House of Lords, he was tortured and confessed. The surviving conspirators were executed in early 1606, and Fawkes himself was hanged, drawn, and quartered, though his death by neck-breaking on the gallows is often noted in contemporary accounts as a grisly mercy compared with the expected torture. His body parts were then displayed as a warning to others. The event is commemorated in Britain today as Bonfire Night, with effigies of Fawkes traditionally burned on November 5th.
