He was previously at Nottingham Forest, but was not named in their playing squad for either of the 2022–23 and 2023–24 seasons. In December 2015, Arters partner and now wife, Rachel, lost their child, Renee. Arter has also had a number of injuries, including a groin injury sustained while on international duty and chronic tendonitis in his achilles which eventually ruptured, leading to almost a year out of action. He struggled to break into the first team under new manager Phil Parkinson and was sent on loan to Carlisle United in 2011. In March 2022, he moved to Notts County on loan until the end of the season.
