Idi Amin was a Ugandan military officer who became the President of Uganda after seizing power in a military coup in 1971. His eight-year rule was marked by extreme brutality, human rights abuses, ethnic persecution, and widespread violence that led to the deaths of an estimated 300,000 people. Amin's regime also caused economic devastation, including the expulsion of the Indian business community. In 1979, after a military intervention by Tanzania in response to Amin's invasion of Tanzanian territory, Amin was overthrown. He fled Uganda, first to Libya, then Iraq, and finally to Saudi Arabia, where he was granted asylum on the condition that he stayed out of politics. He lived there in relative obscurity until his death from kidney failure on August 16, 2003, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He was buried in a simple grave in the Ruwais Cemetery in Jeddah. Despite his notorious legacy as a dictator, some Ugandans expressed a desire for forgiveness and reconciliation after his death.
