Jacob Wetterling was an 11-year-old boy from St. Joseph, Minnesota, who was kidnapped at gunpoint a half-mile from his home on October 22, 1989. He was never seen alive again. In October 2015, Danny James Heinrich was named as a person of interest in Jacob Wetterlings disappearance. He had been questioned by the FBI on December 16, 1989, and a DNA sample was taken, but he was not charged with a crime and was released. In 2015, Heinrichs DNA was matched to the DNA taken in the case of Jared Scheierl, who was abducted in nearby Cold Spring in January 1989 at the age of twelve. In September 2016, Heinrich confessed to abducting, sexually molesting, and killing Jacob Wetterling. He described how he took Jacob to a gravel pit, forced him to undress so he could molest him, and then shot him after he cried and asked to go home. Heinrich led authorities to Jacobs remains, which were buried on a Paynesville farm, about 30 miles from where he abducted Jacob in St. Joseph. Heinrich cannot be charged with murder because the statute of limitations has run out.
