Jan Ullrich is a former professional road bicycle racer from Germany who won gold and silver medals in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and the 1999 Vuelta a España. He retired from professional cycling in February 2007. However, he has faced several controversies and legal issues since his retirement. In 2017, he was convicted of drunk driving in Switzerland after a 2014 car crash in which two people were injured. In 2018, he lost control of his life, became estranged from his children, and was haunted by his past. He was admitted to a psychiatric hospital after attacking a sex worker in Frankfurt and was later handed a fine of €7,200. In 2021, he was admitted to a Mexican hospital because he had relapsed. In 2022, he was arrested in Spain for assaulting a neighbor and then arrested on his return to Germany for allegedly assaulting a prostitute. After being freed from a German court, Ullrich suffered a severe panic attack and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital where his state of health is being assessed by specialists. Despite his troubled past, Ullrich has said that he would be open to making a return to professional cycling and working in the sport again.
