In October 2008, Jennifer Hudsons mother, Darnell Donnerson, and brother, Jason, were shot and killed at Darnells home in Chicago. Jennifers seven-year-old nephew, Julian King, was also reported missing and was later found dead of gunshot wounds three days later. Jennifers sister Julias estranged husband, William Balfour, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder among other charges and is currently serving three life sentences without parole. Balfour was Jennifer Hudsons brother-in-law at the time of the murders.

Jennifer has spoken publicly about the tragedy and how it has affected her life. She has forgiven Balfour for his actions and has stayed focused on her career, knowing thats what her mother and brother would have wanted.
