After assassinating President Abraham Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth fled Fords Theatre and went on the run. His escape continued for the next twelve days and covered over ninety miles through the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. On April 26, 1865, Booth was tracked down and found sheltered in a barn on a farm in rural Northern Virginia. The soldiers set the barn on fire, hoping it would drive Booth out. The bullet severed Booths spinal cord and paralyzed him. John Wilkes Booth died three hours later. His last words were spoken while looking at his hands. “Useless, useless”.
