Josie Russell was the sole survivor of a brutal attack that took place on July 9, 1996, in Chillenden, Kent, England. Josie, along with her mother Lin Russell and sister Megan, were walking home down a quiet country lane when they were attacked by Michael Stone, who was later convicted of the murders of Lin and Megan and the attempted murder of Josie. Josie was tied to a tree and blindfolded during the attack, and she heard her mothers dying cry. After the attack, Josie was rushed to Kings College Hospital in London, where she had to learn to speak again and had a titanium plate inserted in her head. She was treated by Dr. Marion Crouchman, a consultant neuropediatrician at Kings College London. A police officer named Richard Leivers spotted a flicker of life in Josie and carried her away from the scene, rushing her to the hospital. Despite the severity of her injuries, Josie survived the attack and has since made a remarkable recovery.
