Junko Furuta was a 17-year-old high school student who was kidnapped, raped, tortured, and murdered by four teenage boys in 1988. The four perpetrators were Hiroshi Miyano, Jō Ogura, Shinji Minato, and Yasushi Watanabe. Since they were minors at the time of the crime, they received relatively light sentences. However, Shinji Minato was tried as an adult and sentenced to 4 to 6 years in prison in 1990 after pleading guilty to a single charge of committing bodily injury that resulted in death. Once he appealed the sentencing, judge Ryūji Yanase increased it to 5 to 9 years. Eventually, all four of Furutas killers were released from prison. Hiroshi Miyano changed his name and was rearrested for fraud four years later in 2013. He was involved in MLM scams and living a flashy lifestyle, but the charges were dropped, and he allegedly lives a pretty good life. Jō Ogura also changed his name after being released. His mother was the one who vandalized Junko’s grave for “ruining her sons life.” He squandered his fathers savings, the money that was supposed to go to Junko’s family, essentially spoiling himself. In 2004, he assaulted a man who he believed slept with his girlfriend and was sentenced to 4 years for the assault. He has been free again since 2009. Shinji Minato was released from prison for attempted murder in 2019 and has been regularly posting to the account denngekiraketto. He has defended himself by name and even replied to tweets discussing Junkos case.
