As a result of the Army-McCarthy hearings, which were a series of televised hearings held by the United States Senates Subcommittee on Investigations to investigate conflicting accusations between the United States Army and U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy, McCarthys declining national popularity was further exacerbated. The hearings were broadcast on national television and showcased McCarthys bullying tactics, which culminated when, after McCarthy charged that the army’s lawyer employed a man who had once belonged to a communist front group, the lawyer responded, “Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?” . The public turned against McCarthy, and the Senate censured him on December 2, 1954. McCarthy was ruined, and within three years he was dead from alcohol abuse.
