According to multiple sources, including TechCrunch, Messenger Lite, Metas lightweight version of Messenger, is being shut down for Android users. The app was designed to be a more streamlined version of Messenger, with only the core features to save storage space and processing power. It was originally launched in 2016 for users with less-powerful Android devices, and it reached 50 million Google Play Store downloads just a year later. However, the app is no longer available in the Play Store for new users, and it will be inaccessible for existing users after September 18, 2023. When users open the app, they will see a prompt that pushes them toward the main Messenger app. Meta confirmed the closure in a statement to TechCrunch, saying that users of the app will be directed to Messenger or FB Lite to send and receive messages on Messenger. The reasons behind this decision are currently unclear.
