Michael Barrymore is a former British television presenter and comedian whose career effectively ended after the death of Stuart Lubbock in 2001 following a party at Barrymores house in Essex. Lubbocks partially-clothed body was found in Barrymores outdoor swimming pool, and initial investigations suggested that he had drowned. However, further examination showed that he had suffered serious anal injuries, and numerous objects of interest to the police had vanished. Nobody was ever charged with any crime in connection to Lubbock’s death, but revelations about Barrymore’s drug use and suspicions surrounding his conduct were enough to end his career. ITV terminated Barrymores contract and his television career collapsed. A new series of Kids Say the Funniest Things recorded prior to the scandal was pulled from the ITV schedule and never broadcast. The Guardian reported that the BBC cancelled publication of Barrymores life story. In September 2003, Barrymore staged a one-man show at Londons Wyndhams Theatre, which closed after a few days. Barrymore was arrested on suspicion of murder and rape in 2007, but the police investigation into him was dropped three months later, and he was released without charge.
