Monica Dutton is a major character in the TV series Yellowstone, and she has faced numerous brushes with death throughout the series. In season 1, Monica is accidentally punched in the head while breaking up a fight between two boys at the school where she teaches. She falls to the ground and bangs her head on the concrete, rendering her unconscious. She receives some quick medical treatment by a school nurse and heads home where she seems unwell. In that episodes final scene, Monica collapses onto the ground near her front steps. Her husband, Kayce Dutton, rushes over and checks her pulse, which seems to be weak or nonexistent. The last shot shows Kayce repeatedly performing CPR to no avail. It was unclear if Monica would survive the ordeal.

However, Monica survives and undergoes surgery and attends physical therapy to start the healing process. In season 4, Monica and Tate are attacked by a masked home invader, who injures Monica. Right before the masked intruder is about to kill her, Tate quickly pulls out a rifle and kills the attacker, saving his mother.

In season 5, Monica is heavily pregnant with her and Kayces second child. With just a few weeks until her due date, she starts experiencing intense cramps. As Kayce is at work, she drives herself and a concerned Tate to the hospital. But since it’s night and she’s driving fast and in pain, she fails to see a buffalo in the middle of the road before it’s too late. Monica crashes and we later see her unconscious in the hospital.
