Myspace was a social networking site that was founded in 2003 by Brad Greenspan, Chris DeWolfe, and Tom Anderson. It quickly became popular and by 2006, it had surpassed Google and Yahoo as the most visited website in the U.S. However, Myspace began to decline due to several factors, including rising competition from Facebook, a buggy website, an annoying user experience, heavy spending, legal battles, and a lack of innovation. Facebook had several advantages over Myspace, including a cleaner and more user-friendly interface, better privacy controls, and a more streamlined user experience. Additionally, Myspace had particular problems with vandalism, phishing, malware, and spam, which it failed to curtail, making the site seem inhospitable. Myspace also faced public image problems, such as a reputation as a "vortex of perversion". In 2011, Specific Media and Justin Timberlake bought Myspace from News Corp for $35 million and tried to rebrand it, but it failed to regain its former popularity. In 2019, Myspace suffered a major setback when it lost 12 years worth of content in a server migration gone wrong. Today, Myspace still exists, but it is no longer a major player in the social networking space.
