Today, Oscar Piastri, the leader of the Formula One World Championship and McLaren driver, crashed out on the opening lap of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. He started the race from ninth place but jumped the start, triggering the anti-stall system and dropping to the back of the field. Shortly after, he lost control and collided with the barrier at Turn 5, ending his race abruptly. This ended his impressive streak of 34 consecutive points finishes. Piastri admitted to making "silly mistakes" and lapses in judgment, calling it "certainly not my finest moment" as he underestimated the dirty air and went into the corner too fast. This crash significantly impacts the championship as his teammate Lando Norris was able to reduce Piastri's lead in the standings.

Piastri received a five-second penalty for the jump start, but since he retired from the race, he was unable to serve it and will not face a grid drop penalty for the next race.
