Oscar Pistorius is a South African former professional sprinter and convicted murderer. He was found guilty of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in 2013 and was sentenced to 13 years and five months in prison in 2017. Pistorius was denied parole in March 2023 after a hearing at a prison in Pretoria, South Africa. The parole board ruled that he had not served the "minimum detention period" required to be released from prison following his murder conviction. Pistorius lawyers had gone to court to argue that he was eligible for parole because he had served the required portion of time in jail from late 2014 following his culpable homicide conviction. However, the parole board cited a new clarification on Pistorius sentence that was issued by South Africas Supreme Court of Appeal three days before the hearing. The board ruled that Pistorius would be able to apply for parole again in August 2024.
