Roberto Clemente died on December 31, 1972, when the Douglas DC-7 airplane he had chartered crashed off the coast of Isla Verde, Puerto Rico. He was on a humanitarian mission delivering emergency relief supplies to survivors of a massive earthquake in Nicaragua. The plane was overloaded and crashed shortly after takeoff from San Juan International Airport, killing all five people on board. Clemente was 38 years old at the time of his death. After his death, he was posthumously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973, becoming the first Caribbean and second Hispanic player to be honored there. He remains a revered figure both for his achievements in baseball and his humanitarian work.
