Sean Taylor was an American football player who played for the Washington Redskins for four seasons from 2004 to 2007. On November 18, 2007, his Miami home was burglarized while he was away, and eight days later, on November 26, while recovering from a football injury, he was shot in the upper leg by an armed intruder in his home. The bullet severed his femoral artery, creating a mortal wound, and he died at Jackson Memorial Hospital the following day. The intruders were five Fort Myers-area men who broke into his house looking to steal cash and were unaware that Taylor was at home with a knee injury instead of playing a Redskins game against Tampa Bay Buccaneers. One of the suspects revealed that Taylor confronted them at his bedroom door with a machete, which is when he was shot. Taylors fiancée and 18-month-old daughter were also in the house but did not get injured. After Sean Taylors death, the police department immediately commenced investigations, and four men were eventually arrested and charged in connection with the crime. Eric Rivera, the alleged shooter, was arrested on November 30th and charged with first-degree murder, armed burglary, and other charges. In 2014, he was sentenced to more than 57 years in state prison.
