Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, a Mexican-American singing superstar, was tragically shot and killed on March 31, 1995, in Corpus Christi, Texas, by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club. Saldívar had been embezzling thousands of dollars from Selenas earnings, and when Selena found out, she confronted her. The day after Saldívar was banned from contacting Selena, Selena and Saldívar argued by telephone, and Selena told her husband she could no longer trust Saldívar. Selena met with Saldívar at a Days Inn in Corpus Christi, where they argued over financial documents, and Saldívar shot Selena in the back as she tried to flee. Selena managed to reach the lobby and identify Saldívar as her assailant before collapsing. She was pronounced dead at the age of 23 from hypovolemic shock due to blood loss and cardiac arrest.

Saldívar was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years. She has expressed remorse for killing Selena and hopes to reconnect with her family and friends if she gets out of prison, but Selenas father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., hopes Saldívar stays in prison for the rest of her life and believes she killed Selena intentionally.
