Steph Stokes is a character from the long-running ITV soap opera Emmerdale. She was played by Lorraine Chase and appeared on the show from 2002 to 2006, with a brief return in 2013.
Steph was an ex-convict and featured in some of the shows most prominent controversial storylines to date including family bereavement, mental illness, murder, fraud, and incest sexual abuse. She was the mother of Tricia Stokes and had a turbulent lifestyle that became a must-see for viewers across the nation.
In March 2005, Steph had a confrontation with Shelley Williams on a ferry, and Shelley fell overboard. Making a split-second decision, Steph decided not to raise the alarm to rescue Shelley and threw her suitcase overboard.
Steph was arrested after she attempted to kill her father and herself by driving her car off a cliff before leaving the village. Finally willing to do the right thing out of love for her father, Steph confessed to killing her brother Terence and was sentenced to a lifetime in prison.
