Steven Avery is a convicted murderer from Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. He was wrongfully convicted in 1985 of sexual assault and attempted murder and served 18 years of a 32-year sentence before being exonerated by DNA testing and released in 2003. However, he was charged with murder two years later and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being found guilty in 2005. Avery has filed numerous appeals and motions for post-conviction relief over the years, all of which have been unsuccessful. His most recent motion for post-conviction relief, filed in August 2022, argues that another man could have killed Teresa Halbach, the victim in Averys murder case. Averys attorney, Kathleen Zellner, named the alternate suspect in the appeal and argues that the suspect framed Avery by leaving the key to Halbachs car in Averys bedroom. In June 2022, Avery was moved from a maximum security prison to Fox Lake Correctional Institution, a medium security prison in Wisconsin. Avery remains in prison, and his legal team continues to advocate for a new trial.
