The Dixie Chicks were a popular American country band that formed in Dallas, Texas in 1989. They were one of the bestselling female bands of all time and brought traditional instrumentation back to a genre that had been growing overly slick. In 2003, the band was blacklisted by many country radio stations, received death threats, and were criticized by other country musicians after lead singer Natalie Maines criticized then-president George W. Bush over the war in Iraq. Sales of their music and concert tickets declined, and they lost corporate sponsorship. The band continued to speak out and even appeared naked on the cover of Entertainment Weekly in May 2003 with the insults they’d been called. They even wrote a song, "Not Ready To Make Nice," about the furore for their 2006 album Taking The Long Way. Although they won Album of the Year at the Grammys in 2006, country music fans were still not flocking back to them, and it showed in the record sales. The band went on hiatus after their performance at the 2007 Grammy Awards and returned in 2013. In 2020, the band dropped the word "Dixie" from its name, and they released a new album titled "Gaslighter".
