Elisabeth Fritzl was imprisoned by her father, Josef Fritzl, in the basement of their family home in Amstetten, Austria, in 1984. She was held captive for 24 years and suffered rape and abuse at the hands of her father. In 2008, Elisabeths eldest child, who she had birthed due to her father, became critically ill and needed to be urgently hospitalized. Josef agreed to let Elisabeth take the child to the hospital, and it was the first time in 24 years that she saw sunlight. Elisabeth was quickly led back to the basement, but a suspicious note left behind by Josef led the hospital staff to alert the police, who then rescued Elisabeth and her children. After the trial, Elisabeth and her six children were given new identities and moved to an undisclosed location where they are guarded by Austrian authorities. Two of the six children experienced enormous anxiety and panic attacks and had a harder time recovering. Elisabeth and her children reportedly live in a bright and well-lit home.
