On June 29, 1613, the Globe Theatre burned down during a performance of Shakespeares play Henry VIII. The fire was caused by a theatrical cannon that misfired and ignited the wooden beams and thatching. Fortunately, only one man was hurt, and his injuries were minor. The Globe was rebuilt in 1614 with a tile roof. It remained a popular playhouse in Bankside until the closing of the theaters in 1642 with the onset of civil war. It was pulled down a few years later to make room for cheap housing. A modern reconstruction of the Globe, named "Shakespeares Globe," opened in 1997 approximately 750 feet from the site of the original theatre.
