Tank Man was the nickname given to an unidentified Chinese man who stood in front of a column of Type 59 tanks leaving Tiananmen Square in Beijing on June 5, 1989, the day after the Chinese governments violent crackdown on the Tiananmen protests. He stood in the middle of the wide avenue, directly in the path of the approaching tanks, wearing a white shirt and black trousers, and holding two shopping bags. As the tanks came to a stop, the man gestured at them with one of the bags. In response, the lead tank attempted to drive around the man, but the man repeatedly stepped into the path of the tank in a show of nonviolent action.
There are several conflicting stories about what happened to him after the demonstration. Some sources allege that he was executed by firing squad a few months after the Tiananmen Square protests, while others allege that he was executed 14 days later. However, to this day, it is not known what happened to him, and his identity remains unknown.
