Erik and Lyle Menendez were convicted of the 1989 murder of their parents and are currently serving life sentences without the possibility of parole. However, their attorneys have recently claimed that new evidence shows the convictions and life sentences should be overturned. The brothers did not deny killing their parents but argued that they should not be convicted of premeditated murder because they acted in self-defense after enduring a lifetime of abuse by their father. The new evidence includes a letter sent by Erik to his cousin eight months before the murders, which shares details of his fathers abuse, and allegations of sexual abuse from a member of the boy band Menudo against their father. The Los Angeles County District Attorneys office, which prosecuted the two trials in the 1990s, is currently reviewing the habeas petition filed by the brothers attorneys.
