The Sycamore Gap tree, a beloved landmark in northern England, was felled in late September 2023 in an act of vandalism. Workers began the process of removing the tree trunk and crown from Hadrians Wall in October 2023. The trees stump will remain, and the National Trust plans to keep grazing sheep off the stump to allow any shoots that emerge to grow. The tree trunk will be cut into manageable sections and stored, and the National Trust will keep the sections as large as possible to give them flexibility on what the tree becomes in the future. The removal of the tree has prompted an outpouring of emotion, with thousands of tributes, suggestions, and donations coming in from around the UK and beyond in hopes of preserving the tree. Options range from regrowth or grafting to starting over from a new seed. Two men in their 30s were arrested on suspicion of destroying the tree.
