The Temple of Artemis, also known as the Artemision, was a Greek temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis. It was located near the ancient city of Ephesus, in modern-day Turkey. The temple was built by Croesus, king of Lydia, around 550 BCE, and was rebuilt after being burned by a madman named Herostratus in 356 BCE. The temple was destroyed again in 262 CE by invading Goths and was never rebuilt. The ruins of the temple were used as a quarry for building the Byzantine city at Ephesus. Today, all that remains of the temple are its foundations and a single column.
