Peter Sutcliffe, also known as the Yorkshire Ripper, died on November 13, 2020, at the University Hospital of North Durham after contracting Covid-19. He was serving 20 life terms at HMP Frankland in County Durham at the time of his death. A report by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman detailed his deteriorating condition prior to his death, including chest pain, coughing, and vomiting. The report also found that Sutcliffe was not able to talk directly with his wife when he was dying, with prison staff acting as messengers between them. An earlier inquest found that Sutcliffe died of natural causes.
