Zoleka Mandela, the granddaughter of Nelson Mandela, died at the age of 43 after a prolonged battle with cancer. She had been fighting breast cancer for years, which had gone into remission, but later returned and spread to her liver and lungs. She was admitted to the hospital on September 18th for ongoing treatment for cancer of the hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain, and spinal cord, and passed away on September 25th surrounded by friends and family. Zoleka was a tireless activist for healthcare and justice, and campaigned for better road safety after her 13-year-old daughter was killed in a car accident in 2010. She documented her story in her autobiography "When Hope Whispers". The Nelson Mandela Foundation mourned her death and offered its condolences to her family, describing her as a beloved grandchild of Nelson Mandela and a friend of the Foundation.
