In 2019, Coleen Rooney, the wife of soccer star Wayne Rooney, accused Rebekah Vardy, the wife of another soccer star, Jamie Vardy, of leaking private stories about her and her family to the press. Rooney explained that she blocked everyone from viewing her private Instagram stories except one person, and posted a series of false stories to see if they would end up in the Sun. They did, and Rooney felt justified to share who did the leaking, writing, "Its.............. Rebekah Vardys account," an instantly iconic line. Vardy denied the allegation and brought a defamation claim against Rooney. The case, known as the "Wagatha Christie" trial, culminated in a High Court libel battle in London in 2022, which Rooney won. The judge ruled that Rooneys accusation was "substantially true". Vardy was "extremely sad and disappointed" at the judges decision and was left facing a bill for millions of pounds in legal costs. During the trial, the court heard of personal WhatsApp messages sent by Vardy against Rooney, details about her trying to sell a story about a drink-driving arrest involving footballer Danny Drinkwater to the Sun, and her attempts to shift the blame for the leaks about Rooney on to her agent Caroline Watt.
