Mifepristone is a medication used in a regimen together with misoprostol to end a pregnancy that is less than 70 days in duration. After taking the mifepristone pill, most people dont feel anything. The second medication, misoprostol, is taken either right away or up to 48 hours after taking the first pill. Misoprostol causes cramping and bleeding that empties the uterus, and the pregnancy tissue will come out through the vagina. Bleeding and cramping typically arise after a couple of hours of taking the second pill. It may feel like a very crampy period with heavy bleeding or an early miscarriage. The further along the pregnancy is, the more discomfort individuals may experience. Its normal to see large blood clots (up to the size of a lemon) or have tender breasts that may leak a little milk. After the abortion is complete, cramping and bleeding should lighten up as the hours and days go by. You may feel tired or crampy for a day or so, and you’ll have bleeding and spotting for a while. Any chills, fevers, or nausea you have should go away pretty quickly. If you have nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever for more than 24 hours after taking misoprostol, it could be a sign of an infection, and you should call your doctor or health center right away. The abortion process takes several hours, so its recommended to clear your schedule for the day and just focus on caring for yourself if you can. You can be at home, or wherever is comfortable for you to rest, and you may want to have someone you trust with you (or nearby) that you can call if you need anything. Its also recommended to stock up on maxi pads, food, books, movies, or whatever you like to help pass the time, and a heating pad for cramps. Make sure you have some pain medicine like ibuprofen, but don’t take aspirin because it can make you bleed more.
