At the six-week postpartum checkup, you will have a comprehensive examination with your OB or midwife to check on your physical recovery from pregnancy and delivery, see how youre doing emotionally, and address your needs going forward. Heres what will typically happen at your postpartum checkup:
- Youll undergo a physical exam, including a pelvic exam, pap smear, breast exam, and blood pressure check.
- Your healthcare provider will check on your mental health and ask questions to find out if youre having any of the problems new moms often struggle with, such as sleep deprivation, aches and pains, and having the "baby blues".
- Your provider will order any tests or immunizations you need.
- Your doctor will be making sure that you are healing as expected, and that your uterus has returned to its normal size.
- Your doctor will probably ask you about your vaginal discharge, bleeding, and cramping.
- Your provider will discuss future pregnancies, birth control, or plans for future pregnancies.
- Your provider will explain the kind of ongoing care you may need for any medical problems and help you connect with health care professionals who can provide it.
Its important to attend all your postpartum checkups to make sure youre healthy (both physically and mentally) during the postpartum period. If you cant make it to your postpartum appointment, call your provider to reschedule.
