At the first antenatal appointment, which should ideally happen before 10 weeks into pregnancy, the doctor or midwife will check the mothers health and confirm the pregnancy. The appointment usually lasts around an hour. During the visit, the doctor or midwife will take the mothers medical history, including any prior pregnancies, illnesses, or operations, and ask about any current health problems. They will also ask about the biological fathers medical history to find out whether the baby has a higher chance of having a health condition and to make sure the mother has the right care during her pregnancy. The mother will be given information about antenatal care and will be able to discuss the type of care she wants during her pregnancy. The doctor or midwife will also work out when the baby is due. Additionally, the mother may be offered some routine blood and urine tests, as well as a blood test for sickle cell and thalassaemia if the doctor or midwife thinks theres a high chance the mother might have them. The mother may also be given information about how the baby develops during pregnancy, what antenatal classes are available, and how to contact the midwifery team. Finally, the mother may be asked about her diet, exercise, nutrition, weight gain, and how she would like to feed her baby when they are born.
