A DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order is a legal document that means a person has decided not to have cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) attempted on them if their heart or breathing stops. If a person with a DNR order is resuscitated, they may suffer painful injuries during CPR, such as broken ribs and sternal fractures. However, as a bystander, you cannot get into any legal trouble for giving CPR to a person with a DNR. DNR orders only apply to medical professionals, and if a doctor or another healthcare provider knows about a patients DNR and resuscitates them anyway, they can face legal consequences. Disregarding a DNR order can also result in healthcare providers becoming involved in a lawsuit. A DNR order does not mean "do not treat," and other treatments that may prolong life can still be provided.
