In chapter 3 of "Of Mice and Men," George and Slim develop a friendship, and George confides in Slim about why he and Lennie travel together and Lennies mental deficiency. Slim gives Lennie one of his pups, which has to stay in the barn with its mom until it gets bigger, but Lennie tries to sneak it out. Carlson complains about the stink produced by Candys dog and finally convinces Candy to let him shoot it to put it out of its misery. Crooks comes in and announces that Lennie is petting the pups too much in the barn. Candy overhears George and Lennie discussing their plans to buy a farm, and he offers to contribute $300 toward the cost if they let him join them. George eventually agrees, and the three men muse on what their place will be like. Curley picks a fight with Lennie and punches him unmercifully, but Lennie grabs Curleys hand as its coming toward his face and essentially crushes it completely.
