The referendum to enshrine an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voice to Parliament in the Constitution has failed. The federal government has said that it will not put the voice into law without a successful referendum, so on that front, nothing changes now that this vote is over. However, the federal government will now be facing questions over how it plans to approach Indigenous affairs without the overarching policy of the Voice. There have been questions over whether the government would proceed with a legislated Voice to Parliament if the referendum failed, but that is unlikely given its not what the Uluru Statement from the Heart called for. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton had previously promised to hold a second referendum if he wins government at the next election on constitutional recognition of Indigenous people. Prior to the referendum, some of the leading campaigners for the Yes vote, including Marcia Langton and Noel Pearson, have indicated they intend to take a step back from public life.
