Using hydrogen peroxide on a wound is not recommended as it can actually harm the tissue and delay healing. Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidizing agent that can destroy healthy tissue in addition to germs. It can also prevent wound healing rather than promoting it. When you have an open wound, you dont have the normal skin barrier there protecting you anymore, so the exposed area of tissue becomes vulnerable to infection. Instead of using hydrogen peroxide, the best way to clean a minor wound is with cool running water and mild soap. Rinse the wound for at least five minutes to remove dirt, debris, and bacteria. After washing, pat dry with a clean towel. Then apply an antibiotic ointment and cover it with a bandage. Seek medical care for larger wounds and gashes, excessive bleeding, or if theres debris stuck in the wound.
